Jennifer Karpowicz has lived on the Outer Banks since 1995 and has been successfully practicing law as both an Assistant District Attorney and a District Court Judge with well over 16 years of experience.  During that time, she has tried and successfully handled thousands of cases to include minor traffic offenses to more serious offenses, including rape and murder.  As a District Court Judge,  Jennifer Karpowicz presided over multiple courts to include family law cases, child custody cases, domestic violence cases, DSS cases, child support cases, juvenile cases, civil cases, and criminal district court.   

Attorney Jennifer Karpowicz graduated from Manteo High School in 1998 and then went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received her Bachelor’s Degree in 2002.  She then went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law and graduated in 2008.  She successfully passed the bar exam and was sworn in as a licensed attorney during the September 2008 session of Dare County District Court.   

Following law school, Jennifer Karpowicz worked as an Assistant District Attorney in the First Prosecutorial District where she prosecuted a large number of cases in all seven counties in the District to include Dare, Currituck, Camden, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Gates, and Chowan.   

In 2021, Jennifer Karpowicz was appointed by the Governor as a District Court Judge. 

In 2023, Jennifer Karpowicz went back to the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office where she was named Prosecutor of the Year for 2023.  She also successfully tried the first Aggravated Death by Distribution case in the State of North Carolina in March 2024.
